Viniece Jennings Featured Recently in Nature Communications

An article by Assistant Professor of Public Health, Viniece Jennings was recently featured in the premiere scientific journal, Nature Communications. Jennings’ piece was also selected for the Editor’s Highlights which are aimed to showcase the best papers that have been recently published. The article discusses how green infrastructure can combat the effects of air pollution but how unequal access affects the health of marginalized populations. Jennings and her co-writers also offer strategies for moving forward in this area.

Dr. Jennings teaches courses at the intersection of public health and the environmental field. Her research is on the public health dimensions of urban green spaces. She has also served as a senior fellow for the Environmental Leadership Program since 2009 and was a research scientist for the US Forest Service before joining the faculty of Agnes Scott College.

Last spring, Dr. Jennings taught a course entitled “Environmental and Public Health Communication”, which generated several “Scottie Climate Stories”- featured here on the website for Agnes Scott’s upcoming Women & Global Leadership Conference. The course focuses on communication practices and theories related to public health, the environment, and sustainability. It includes a particular emphasis on strategies for promoting behavior change as well as empowering individuals and communities. Dr. Jennings will also moderate the conference’s “Solutions Sessions”- a series of small facilitated discussions with climate experts/community partners and Agnes Scott students, staff, and faculty. Each table will be challenged to address a problem related to women and climate justice. Results will be documented as part of a summary of collaborative solutions informing the future work of conference participants. The 2021 Women’s Global Leadership Conference is entitled, “Building a Better Future: Women and Climate Justice” and will be held in person and virtually on September 23-25.
